The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says it has installed 148,389 meters in households between July and September.
This revelation was part of the commission’s third quarterly report, made public on its website over the weekend.
While the figures denote a commendable effort in enhancing metering infrastructure, there was a slight dip in installations compared to the previous quarter.
The Q3 installations showed a decline by 32,670, in contrast to the robust 181,059 meters installed in the second quarter of 2023.
During the third quarter, NERC employed various frameworks to execute its metering initiatives.
Under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework, a substantial 147,736 meters were successfully installed, marking a significant contribution to the goal of empowering consumers with accurate metering capabilities.
Additionally, the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) saw the installation of 207 meters, aimed at achieving broader coverage and accessibility.
The vendor-financed framework emerged as a success story, recording an impressive 446-meter installations. However, there was no installation under the DisCo Financed framework during this period.
NERC emphasized its expectation for Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to leverage any of the five-meter financing frameworks at their disposal to bridge metering gaps within their respective service areas.
Recognizing the potential for customer exploitation in the absence of meters, NERC reiterated its commitment to consumer protection.
The commission continues to issue monthly energy caps for all feeders in each DisCo.
These caps serve as a safeguard, setting the maximum amount of energy that may be billed to an unmetered customer for the respective month.
The methodology for these caps is based on gross energy received by the DisCo and consumption by metered customers, promoting fairness and transparency.
