A Nigerian-British businessman and social media influencer, Igho Ubiribo, has died after undergoing a penis enlargement procedure during a luxury holiday in Thailand.
Ubiribo, 43, reportedly suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism after doctors injected about 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine into his penis at an unnamed clinic in Bangkok.
Findings from an inquest in the United Kingdom revealed that the businessman underwent the procedure in March while on holiday in Thailand with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen.
According to evidence presented at the inquest, Ubiribo and his wife returned to their Marriott hotel after the procedure, where they went for a massage.
It was during the massage that he reportedly complained of chest pain before collapsing and losing consciousness.
He was subsequently rushed to Sukhumvit Hospital, where he initially responded to medical personnel.
His wife reportedly informed the doctors that he had recently undergone filler injections, raising concerns that the cosmetic procedure could have contributed to his condition.
Medical personnel suspected a pulmonary embolism and recommended further scans. However, Ubiribo reportedly lost consciousness before the examination could be completed.
He was later transferred to the intensive care unit, where medical personnel attempted to revive him through prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
He was pronounced dead in the early hours of March 6.
A postmortem examination conducted in the UK later found material in Ubiribo’s lungs consistent with the hyaluronic acid used during the cosmetic procedure.
Pathologist John du Parcq told the inquest that the material found in the businessman’s lungs matched the substance injected during the treatment.
The pathologist said the findings supported the conclusion that Ubiribo had suffered a pulmonary embolism linked to the procedure.
The coroner, Jean Harkin, subsequently ruled that his death was caused by a pulmonary embolism associated with the cosmetic injection.
A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot or other material blocks a blood vessel supplying the lungs and can become a life-threatening medical emergency.
Doctor says businessman had no major health condition
Evidence before the inquest also showed that Ubiribo had previously undergone joint surgeries and had been described by his London doctor as pre-diabetic and suffering from gout.
However, his doctor reportedly said he had no other major medical conditions.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are marketed as a non-surgical option for increasing penile girth, but injectable cosmetic procedures can carry risks, particularly when complications arise.
Ubiribo, who was also known by the names “Tiny”, “Denisi” and “Ego”, was known for documenting his luxury lifestyle on social media.
He reportedly had about 185,000 followers on Instagram and owned properties in Los Angeles and London.
Reports put the value of his Los Angeles home at about $1.1m, while his London apartment was reportedly worth approximately $600,000.
He married Zimbabwean fashion designer Danielle Simba Allen in a lavish ceremony in 2022.
Following his death, Ubiribo was buried in London in a gold coffin, with reports putting the cost of his funeral arrangements at hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Afrobeats singer Davido, described as a childhood friend of the businessman, reportedly attended the funeral and paid tribute to him.
The case has renewed concerns over the risks associated with injectable cosmetic procedures after medical evidence presented at the inquest linked Ubiribo’s death to complications arising from the treatment.
