In a decisive move, the Nigerian Law School has banned Baze University in Abuja from admitting students into its Law Faculty for five years, citing consistent violations of the approved admission quota.
The decision was announced following a quarterly meeting of the Council of Legal Education (CLE) on November 23, 2023.
Baze University, founded by Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the running mate to the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, faced the ban due to a significant backlog of 347 law students waiting for admission to the Nigerian Law School.
The university had continuously exceeded its quota of 50 students per session, approved by the Council of Legal Education.
Acting Secretary and Director of Administration of the Nigerian Law School, Ms Aderonke Osho, revealed in a statement that an Accreditation panel, led by the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, found that Baze University had admitted over 750 law students since 2017.
This number, according to the Council, would normally require about 15 years of admissions based on the allocated quota.
Baze University’s three-year LL.B program for some UTME candidates was also flagged as a violation, lacking approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the Council of Legal Education.
The Council of Legal Education has resolved to impose a moratorium on the admission of law students to Baze University’s Faculty of Law, effective immediately.
The ban is set to last for five years, subject to renewal if corrective measures are not taken. During this period, the Council aims to address the backlog of law students and will conduct follow-up visits to assess the university’s remedial actions.
In the statement, the Council urged the National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), parents, guardians, prospective applicants, and the public to take note of Baze University’s current status and the imposed moratorium on its law faculty.
