In its latest weather forecast, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has raised concerns about the possibility of dust haze and thunderstorms sweeping across the nation from Monday to Wednesday.
The agency’s Weather Outlook report, released on Monday, reveals a detailed overview of the weather conditions expected in various regions.
The Northern region is expected to experience dust haze with visibility ranging from 1km to 3km, along with localized visibility of 1,000m or less on Monday.
Thunderstorms are also anticipated, particularly in parts of Taraba state.
For the North Central states, suspended dust is likely to reduce visibility to 2km to 5km, accompanied by thunderstorms in various regions, including the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, and Benue states during the afternoon and evening.
Thunderstorms are also expected in the Southern states during the morning hours.
NiMet anticipates moderate dust haze with a visibility range of 2km to 5km over the North on Wednesday.
The forecast indicates cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the North Central region during the morning hours.
Thunderstorms are expected in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa states in the afternoon and evening.
Over the Southern region, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are anticipated in the morning, followed by thunderstorms in various states later in the day.
The agency has issued a cautionary statement, highlighting the risk of moderate to heavy rainfall leading to flash floods and advising the public to take necessary precautions, including avoiding driving and walking through floodwaters.
Additionally, citizens are urged to stay vigilant as strong winds may precede and accompany the thunderstorms.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s advice extends to disaster risk managers, agencies, and individuals, urging them to be proactive in preventing loss of lives and property during the rainy season.
Furthermore, airline operators are encouraged to regularly check weather reports and alerts from NiMet for effective operational planning.
