A Nigerian man, Oladip Oshodi, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a series of violent crimes, including the rape of a woman who escaped by jumping from a window.
Oshodi, 48, was sentenced on Friday, July 5, after being found guilty of two counts of rape, administering a noxious substance, threats to kill, grievous bodily harm, and controlling coercive behaviour.
The sentencing took place at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
The Metropolitan Police reported that Oshodi was arrested on July 12, 2023, by detectives from the East Area Public Protection Unit.
He had been held in custody throughout the legal proceedings and was convicted on May 10, 2024, of all charges.
The horrific events leading to Oshodi’s conviction occurred on the evening of July 11, 2023.
Oshodi made sexual advances toward a woman, who was known to him, at his home in the Mayesbrook area of Dagenham.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that despite the victim’s clear refusal, Oshodi raped her twice that night and subjected her to a brutal beating.
It was further gathered that in a desperate bid for safety, the victim leapt from a ground-floor window, collapsing in the middle of the road.
Passersby reportedly quickly came to her aid, calling the police and ensuring her safety until emergency services arrived.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment and received ongoing support from specialist officers.
Detective Constable Serena McGhee described Oshodi as a dangerous individual and expressed relief that he would no longer pose a threat to women.
She praised the victim’s courage and the witnesses’ quick actions.
“It is right that Oshodi will now serve a long sentence in a place where he cannot harm women.
“The bravery of the victim and the witnesses in this case are commendable,” McGhee stated.
Throughout the investigation and trial, Oshodi showed no remorse, according to McGhee.
She added, “I am pleased that he has been made to face the consequences of his actions.”
PC Kayleigh Grafton, a specialist officer who works with victims of sexual offences, emphasised the survivor’s desperate situation, noting, “The survivor in this case was fleeing for her life when she jumped onto the street to escape this man.”
She expressed hope that Oshodi’s sentence would encourage other victims of sexual offences to come forward, reassuring them of police support and commitment to their safety.
Grafton added, “We are here to support you and our mission is to keep you safe and support you every step of the way.”
