NLC,TUC Declare Nationwide Strike Starting October 3rd

Aminat Gusanu

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly announced a nationwide strike scheduled to commence on the 3rd of October.

This decision was communicated through a communique following virtual meetings of their respective national executive councils held on the 26th of September 2023.

In the statement, both organizations expressed their commitment to the ideals of an independent Nigeria and their determination to take control of the nation’s destiny.

The communique stated, “We will initiate an indefinite and complete shutdown of the nation, commencing from the early hours of Tuesday, the 3rd of October 2023. We urge all workers in Nigeria to cease their services starting from the same date.

Furthermore, we call upon all affiliates and state councils to immediately mobilize for street protests and rallies until the government responds positively to our demands.”

It’s worth noting that earlier this month, the NLC had initiated a two-day warning strike in response to concerns over the removal of the petrol subsidy and its impact on the masses.

During this strike, some states witnessed full compliance, resulting in the suspension of activities in government institutions, while partial compliance was observed in others.

The NLC had previously issued a 21-day ultimatum which expired on September 26th, leading to the decision to proceed with an indefinite strike action.
