Governors of the 19 northern states and traditional rulers have thrown their weight behind the establishment of state police, urging the National Assembly to accelerate the passage of relevant legislation to actualise the move.
The endorsement was the major outcome of a joint meeting between the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council held on Saturday in Kaduna.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by NSGF Chairman and Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the leaders said the decision was a direct response to the worsening security situation across the region.
“The Forum reiterated its support for the creation of the State Police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its take-off,” the communiqué read.
The northern leaders emphasised the need for nonpartisan collaboration, peer review mechanisms among states, and a shared resolve to combat insecurity and foster regional development.
Commending President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the forum noted the President’s ongoing commitment to addressing the North’s infrastructure and security deficits.
To bolster security operations in the short term, the meeting resolved to strengthen local security initiatives and create interstate platforms for coordinated surveillance and intelligence-sharing along border communities.
“The Forum also resolved to urgently set up inter-state platforms to coordinate surveillance on our joint borders,” the communiqué added.
The call for state police has gained renewed momentum as insecurity — including banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping — continues to plague many northern communities, with existing federal security architecture struggling to cope.
The endorsement by northern leaders adds significant political weight to the clamour for decentralised policing, a proposal that has long generated debate among stakeholders across the country.
The governors also pledged to work closely with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to mobilise broader support for constitutional amendments that would make state police a reality.
