The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, has been shot dead in Zamfara State.
Marafa was reportedly killed on Sunday while returning from Gusau, the state capital, according to a statement issued by the university.
The university’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, announced the death on Sunday, describing it as sudden and untimely.
Ajayi said the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff and students of the university, mourned the death of the bursar.
“According to information available to the University, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau,” the statement said.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately disclosed by the university.
Marafa’s death came about a year before the expiration of his tenure as bursar. He was appointed to the position on September 17, 2022, for a five-year tenure scheduled to end in September 2027.
The university described the deceased as a dedicated administrator who served the institution meritoriously and occupied several positions of responsibility during his career.
Ajayi said Marafa’s death was a major loss to the university community, describing him as “a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family.”
He expressed the university’s condolences to the deceased’s immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others mourning his death.
The registrar added that details of the burial arrangements would be announced after they were released by the family.
The statement prayed for the forgiveness of Marafa’s shortcomings and for Allah to grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
The university also prayed for strength for his family, friends, colleagues and the entire NOUN community to bear the loss.
