Adire/Kampala traders in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital are in agony following the flooding of China’s fake products in the market posing threats to their livelihood.
PLATFORM TIMES’ recent visit to the Adire mall in Itoku market, Abeokuta, revealed that the indigenous products have been dislodged from the market by China products.
Speaking with PLATFORM TIMES on the challenges facing the Adire/Kampala traders in the market, the Osi Iyaloja Adire/Kampala market, Alhaja Modinat Oyetola described the development as a big threat to them.
She said,” things change few years ago when China took over the market. They will send their representatives to Nigeria, Abeokuta precisely to check maybe we have designed new pattern.
“They went away with our design, reproduced it and sent it back to us. Many people are scared to put more money into the business, because of China products which have taken over the market .
“Our people will not sleep all day and night to bring the best in them to make good and new pattern but, unfortunately within three weeks, China will produce that pattern in low prices.
“And our customers will pick fake products from China over the one made here in Nigeria because it was sold at cheap price and the original was in high rate. “
She therefore urged the government to help proffer solution to this alarming issue describing it as a big threat to the business.
She complained that what they buy for N10,000 is now N15,000 due to high cost of the materials.
She also lamented that the profit is now low.
