The Ogun State chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria, FIBAN, has celebrated the 85th birthday of the Oluwo Iporo and Apena Egba, Chief Suarau Olayiwola Alani Bankole, describing him as an influential elder statesman, political leader and custodian of Egbaland’s history and cultural heritage.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chief Olalekan Shoyinka, popularly known as Ayinla Egba, the association congratulated Bankole, popularly called “Caterpillar Ẹkùn Oko Oke,” on attaining the milestone age.
FIBAN said Bankole’s 85 years had been marked by leadership, political engagement, community service and contributions to the preservation of the history and traditions of Egbaland.
The association described the octogenarian as a political figure whose counsel and relationships across political divides had earned him recognition beyond Egbaland.
According to FIBAN, Bankole’s influence extends beyond partisan politics, noting that his knowledge of history, traditions and the personalities that shaped Nigerian society had made him a valuable repository of knowledge for younger generations.
The association said his traditional positions as Oluwo Iporo and Apena Egba had further placed him in a position of responsibility in the community.
“His experiences provide younger generations with valuable lessons about leadership, resilience, service, politics, culture and community development,” the statement said.
FIBAN also highlighted Bankole’s relationship with the broadcasting and wider media community, saying his appreciation of the role of the media had made his association with broadcasters particularly significant.
The association said his willingness to engage with broadcasters and other stakeholders demonstrated his recognition of the importance of informed public discourse to democracy and societal development.
It added that the personality behind the popular sobriquet, “Caterpillar Ẹkùn Oko Oke,” had combined a formidable public presence with extensive experience and knowledge of society.
FIBAN said the birthday celebration should therefore be viewed not merely as a commemoration of longevity but as an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and relationships built by the former political leader over several decades.
The association prayed for continued good health, strength and peace of mind for the traditional title holder, while urging younger generations to benefit from his wealth of experience.
The statement read in part, “At 85, Chief Suarau Olayiwola Alani Bankole represents much more than the celebration of longevity. His life is a remarkable testament to leadership, service, political influence, intellectual depth, cultural preservation and an enduring commitment to the progress of his people and Nigeria at large.”
FIBAN added, “We celebrate not only the 85 years of life, but the decades of impact, relationships, service, wisdom and enduring legacy that have accompanied the journey.”
The association wished the Apena Egba many more years of fruitful service and prayed that his contributions to Egbaland, Ogun State and Nigeria would continue to be remembered.
“Happy 85th birthday to our Grand Patron, the Oluwo Iporo and Apena Egba, Chief Suarau Olayiwola Alani Bankole, ‘Caterpillar Ẹkùn Oko Oke,’” it said.
