The Ogun State Government has called on students to cultivate a strong reading culture as a pathway to academic excellence, critical thinking and future leadership.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, made the call during an event organised by the Ogun State Library Board in collaboration with the state chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors to mark the 2026 World Book Day, themed, ‘Go All In: If You Are Into It, Read It’.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, Arigbabu said consistent and extensive reading remained a key driver of intellectual development, noting that it enhances analytical reasoning and communication skills required for leadership.
He urged students to deploy digital tools positively by accessing educational resources online, rather than engaging in unproductive activities.
The commissioner also cautioned against social vices such as truancy, examination malpractice, indecent dressing and other sharp practices, stressing that disciplined reading habits would reinforce classroom learning and promote proper upbringing.
“I encourage you to read beyond your school books, explore diverse fields, engage with different authors and expose yourselves to new perspectives.
“This will boost your creativity, strengthen your analytical abilities and prepare you for future career challenges,” he said.
In her remarks, Oloko, represented by the Director of Education Support Services, Dr. Mary Okereafor, described reading as a gateway to knowledge, innovation and personal transformation. She commended the participants for their involvement in activities aimed at deepening their interest in books.
Earlier, the Executive Director of the Ogun State Library Board, Mr. Vincent Giwa, said the theme of the event was a call to action, encouraging individuals to align their reading habits with their passions.
“The message is simple: whatever sparks your curiosity, there is a book for it. If you are genuinely interested, you will find joy in reading and learning,” he said.
Also speaking, the state Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Dr. Abiodun Lasile, and the Special Guest of Honour, Dr. Tope Olaifa, highlighted the transformative impact of reading, noting that it shapes reasoning and broadens perspectives.
They urged students to develop purposeful reading habits to fully grasp and apply knowledge gained from books.
