The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide,Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu,has expressed concern over the marginalisation of the Igbo people in governance, resource allocation, and development in Southeast Nigeria.
Iwuanyanwu who spoke in a recent interview on Arise News Television,emphasised the pivotal role played by the Igbo community in shaping the destinies of Lagos and Abuja, highlighting their significant contributions to the development of these key cities.
He lamented the current state of affairs, stating that Igbos are not only sidelined but also subjected to abuse and insults.
Addressing the broader issue of Nigeria’s governance structure, Iwuanyanwu called for a return to “true federalism” and criticised the existing unitary system.
He argued that without proper restructuring, Nigeria would continue to face challenges.
Reflecting on historical changes, he noted the shift from a federal constitution in the early 1960s to a unitary one, which he deemed inappropriate for a nation with diverse backgrounds.
Calling attention to the importance of restructuring, Iwuanyanwu urged the government, particularly referencing Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, to take steps toward achieving it.
He underscored the need for a constitutional overhaul to address the current concentration of power in the presidency.
Highlighting the impact of this concentration of power, he stated that a restructured Nigeria would reduce the excessive focus on the presidency and allow for more balanced development across regions.
Iwuanyanwu also pointed out regional disparities, citing the lack of infrastructure development in certain areas, such as the absence of trains in the South South and South East regions.
Expressing deep sadness about the treatment of Igbos, he noted their commitment to national development, particularly in Lagos and Abuja.
He refuted claims of exclusive credit for the development, acknowledging the contributions of other inhabitants but stressed the significant role played by Igbos.
Iwuanyanwu highlighted the need to address the negative narratives surrounding the Igbo community, especially the unfair characterization of Igbos as greedy due to their efforts in developing Lagos and Abuja.
He emphasized the importance of recognizing the diverse political affiliations within the Igbo community and fostering a more inclusive and respectful national dialogue.
