The Osun State Police Command has arrested a woman following the sudden death of a vigilante member identified as Sunday, popularly known as Apetu, after a sexual encounter in Ile-Ife.
The incident occurred around 2:30pm on Sunday in the Odi-Olokun area of Ile-Ife, throwing residents into confusion as conflicting accounts emerged over the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
Apetu reportedly became critically distressed shortly after the encounter at Ooni Ilare Street.
A video circulating on social media showed the man in apparent distress, with reports indicating that he was gasping and screaming while pleading with the woman to assist him.
The woman was subsequently taken into custody at the Moore Police Division as the police commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A situation report attributed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said the man was found in severe distress before he eventually died.
His remains were deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, for further examination.
The actual cause of death had yet to be established as of Tuesday.
The incident has also triggered speculation among residents, with some attributing the death to a traditional belief commonly referred to as “thunderbolt.”
However, there is no official medical or scientific evidence linking the man’s death to such a claim.
The police have therefore cautioned residents against spreading unverified accounts capable of fuelling tension or misleading the public while the investigation continues.
A senior police officer in Osun confirmed that the command was aware of the reports circulating on social media but urged members of the public to allow investigators and medical experts to determine what happened.
The police are expected to establish the sequence of events leading to the man’s death, while medical authorities may also be required to determine the immediate cause of death.
The development has attracted considerable attention in Ile-Ife, particularly because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the man’s sudden death.
The police have not announced any charge against the woman arrested in connection with the incident.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and refrain from drawing conclusions until the outcome of the investigation and medical examination is made public.
