Over 200 pupils attending the LEA Nuruddeen Nursery and Primary School Karu, located in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have been observed sitting on the floor during their class hours due to a severe shortage of chairs.
This dire situation has drawn widespread condemnation, with a civic technology platform, sharing photographs of the pupils, describing the scenario as a “shame”.
The photos circulated, captured the stark reality of the students, sitting on bare floors in their classrooms, attempting to engage in their studies without the basic necessity of chairs.
In a social media post, dismay was expressed over the situation, stating, “SHOCKING!!! Nigeria’s Shame: Inside Abuja School Where Pupils Sit On Bare Floor.”
The post further called upon government officials, including @GovWike and @IretiKingibe, to intervene and provide assistance to the school, emphasizing the detrimental impact of such conditions on the children’s education.
This distressing revelation follows previous reports of inadequate infrastructure in government schools within the Federal Capital Territory.
There are reports that students were studying under fallen roofs, with a severe shortage of competent teachers exacerbating the situation.
A report issued by Tracka, a popular procurement non-profit organization, shed light on the dire conditions prevailing in the Kuchichacha LEA Primary School.
According to the report, the school’s infrastructure was in a state of disrepair, with classrooms on the verge of collapse and only five teachers struggling to attend to the needs of 500 students.
Furthermore, residents of the community expressed their distress, revealing that parents were increasingly withdrawing their children from the school due to safety concerns and the lack of quality education.
Despite their efforts to draw attention to the deteriorating conditions through various channels, including appeals to the council chairman and UBEC, their pleas have gone unanswered.
In light of these alarming developments, stakeholders have called upon relevant authorities, including @NigEducation and @ubecnigeria, to urgently intervene and address the pressing needs of these schools.
