The Oyo State Chapter of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria has announced a seven-day warning strike starting Monday, June 24, 2024.
The union’s president, John Fabunmi, disclosed this information in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
He added that th decision was communicated on Sunday in a notification letter sent to all members across various health institutions, including ministries, departments, and local government areas.
Fabinmi said the strike is necessary to address their ongoing demands, which have yet to be met by the state government.
He explained that despite multiple reminders to the government about their grievances, no significant actions have been taken to resolve the issues.
The notification letter highlighted the union’s previous communication with the government.
It referred to a letter dated May 27, 2024, which gave the state government a 14-day ultimatum to respond to their demands.
However, the union stated that no satisfactory measures have been implemented to address the concerns raised.
The letter reads in part: “Re: Notification of Industrial Action. Sequel to our letter with ref. No. OYSC/MHWUN/AD/INDU.ACT/0524 dated May 27, 2024 on the above subject matter giving the state government a 14-day ultimatum to attend to all our grievances, we wish to draw the attention of Your Excellency to the fact that up till now nothing has been done to assuage the present situation.
“In light of this ongoing situation and increasing agitation within the union, the leadership resolved to initiate a seven-day warning strike.
“The strike is intended to compel the government to address the union’s demands urgently.
“All our members in all health institutions, ministries, and all Local Governments will be participating in the seven-day warning strike, which will commence at 12:01 a.m. midnight on Monday, June 24, 2024. After this period, further actions may be embarked upon if necessary.”
