The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured all chairmanship and councillorship seats across the 30 local government areas (LGAs) of Osun State.
The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye, officially declared the results on Saturday following a highly contentious poll.
The electoral exercise, which proceeded despite warnings from both the police and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, was upheld based on a judgment from the Osun State High Court mandating OSSIEC to conduct elections to fill vacant positions.
This decision defied efforts by law enforcement to halt the process, including the sealing of OSSIEC headquarters in Osogbo and subsequent arrests, prompting the commission to relocate operations discreetly.
The poll, which commenced as early as 8 am across all 30 LGAs, was marked by significant political tension and security concerns.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, who participated in the voting process at Ede North LGA, praised the peaceful conduct of the elections, urging for calm and non-violence among constituents.
The electoral triumph for the PDP comes amid escalating tensions between political factions, particularly with the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has contested the validity of the elections following recent legal reversals favoring their reinstatement in previously contested local council positions.
This legal backdrop intensified with reported clashes between APC and PDP supporters, resulting in multiple fatalities and heightened security alerts across the state.
Governor Adeleke, addressing concerns over potential disruptions, had earlier called for restraint and peaceful participation, emphasizing Osun State’s historical commitment to electoral harmony.
Despite the AGF’s assertions regarding legal reversals and warnings from law enforcement agencies citing security threats, OSSIEC proceeded with its mandate, underscoring judicial autonomy and constitutional obligations.
