The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested three men following a disturbance allegedly linked to a masquerade activity along Mbak Akpan Ekpenyong in the state.
The suspects were arrested on August 31, 2026, after the command received a distress call at about 5:52pm concerning the incident.
The command said its operatives immediately mobilised to the area, where they restored normalcy and prevented the situation from escalating.
According to the police, other participants at the scene fled upon sighting the officers, while masquerade regalia allegedly found in the possession of the three suspects were recovered and secured as exhibits.
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the officers for their prompt response and professional handling of the incident.
Azare warned individuals and groups against hiding behind cultural or traditional activities to perpetrate disorder, intimidation, violence or other unlawful acts.
He said the command would not allow any individual or group to threaten public peace or undermine security across the state.
The police commissioner, however, stressed that the command recognised the importance of lawful cultural and traditional practices.
He said the police would continue to engage relevant traditional and community stakeholders to ensure that cultural activities were conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
Azare urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, threats to public safety and other breaches of the peace to the nearest police formation or through established emergency communication channels.
The command said its intervention was aimed at maintaining public order while ensuring that lawful cultural practices were not unnecessarily disrupted.
