Police officers in Edo State reportedly fled after Kaduna Eboigbodin, a former chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), slumped and died during a heated dispute over his vehicle particulars at a checkpoint in Benin City.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday along Upper Sakponba Road when Eboigbodin, who was driving with his wife, was stopped by police officers demanding to see his vehicle documents.

According to sources, the deceased complied by presenting the requested particulars.

However, a discrepancy in the documents reportedly led the officers to accuse him of driving a stolen vehicle.

The situation escalated as the officers allegedly ordered Eboigbodin to drive to their station. He refused, insisting on knowing his offense.

Witnesses stated that the argument became heated, leading to the former labor leader collapsing on the spot.

Shockingly, the police officers fled the scene, leaving Eboigbodin’s wife to rush him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Reacting to the incident, the Edo State Police Commissioner, Umoru Ozigi, has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding Eboigbodin’s death.

In a statement on Wednesday, the police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, said the commissioner expressed grave concern over the allegations of misconduct by the officers involved.

“The Command has received, with great concern, the news of Mr. Kaduna Eboigbodin’s death. An investigation has been ordered to address issues of unprofessional conduct,” Yamu said.

The commissioner also extended condolences to Eboigbodin’s widow, family, and associates, emphasizing the police’s commitment to justice and its ongoing partnership with civil society organizations, including the NLC.

“The cordial working relationship between the police, civil society organizations, NLC, and other stakeholders in the state is crucial, and the Command assures that justice will prevail,” Yamu added.
