The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, over his alleged defiance of a police ban on durbar activities during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, which led to violence in the state.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, on Wednesday, inaugurated an eight-member Special Investigation Panel (SIP) to examine the violence that erupted on Sunday, March 30, 2025, following the Emir’s Eid procession.
A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the panel would uncover the root causes of the violence and determine whether there was a breach of the police directive banning all durbar and horse-riding activities during the Sallah festivities.
The police had announced the ban on durbar activities last Friday, citing security concerns. However, on Eid day, chaos broke out during the Emir’s procession, resulting in the death of a vigilante member, Surajo Rabiu, from Sabo Titi Jaba Quarters.
Another individual, Aminu Suleman from Kofar Mata Quarters, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Hospital in Kano.
The police also arrested two suspects, 20-year-old Usman Sagiru of Sharifai Quarters and 35-year-old Nasir Idris of Kofar Mazugal Quarters, in connection with the violence.
In addition, Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku, has been summoned for interrogation over his alleged involvement in the defiance of the durbar ban.
The investigation panel has been directed to expedite its findings to ensure that justice is served. “Anyone found culpable will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” the police stated.
Reiterating its stance against thuggery, the police warned that any individual engaging in acts likely to cause a breach of peace or public disorder would be dealt with decisively.
“All forms of thuggery (Daba) activities will not be tolerated,” the statement added.
The development has sparked concerns among residents over the potential political undertones of the probe, given the Emir’s influence and the historical tensions surrounding the Kano emirate.
