The Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially announced that Saturday, March 1, 2025, will mark the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
In a formal declaration from his palace on Friday evening, Sultan Abubakar III confirmed that the crescent moon was sighted earlier that day, Friday, February 28, which corresponds to the 29th day of Shaban.
This sighting, he noted, has been thoroughly verified and accepted by the National Moon Sighting Council, thereby affirming the commencement of Ramadan for the year 1446 in the Islamic calendar.
The Sultan expressed gratitude for the widespread reports of the moon’s sighting, which came from various regions of the country.
He assured that these reports were meticulously checked, aligning with the established Islamic tradition of moon sighting to determine the beginning of Ramadan.
In his announcement, the Sultan called on all Muslims to dedicate themselves to acts of worship during this sacred month.
He emphasized the importance of prayer, seeking Allah’s blessings, and asking for divine guidance for the nation and its leaders.
The Sultan also urged Muslims to prioritize charity, reminding them of the significance of supporting the less privileged and ensuring that those in need are included in the blessings of the fasting period.
“This is a time for reflection, self-discipline, and devotion. Let us use this blessed month to seek Allah’s mercy and strengthen our faith,” Sultan Abubakar said in his message to the Muslim community.
Furthermore, he encouraged Muslims across the country to observe the fast with sincerity and unity, stressing the importance of community spirit and mutual support during Ramadan.
He also underscored the need to remain mindful of those who are less fortunate, suggesting that acts of charity, both big and small, will go a long way in making the fasting period more meaningful for all.
Islamic leaders from all over Nigeria have corroborated the Sultan’s announcement, confirming the sighting of the crescent moon.
Consequently, Muslims throughout the country will begin the month-long period of fasting, prayers, and devotion, which is a central tenet of the Islamic faith.
