The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC) has petitioned the National Assembly to investigate alleged medical negligence at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, which it claims has led to preventable deaths.
In a statement on Friday, NHRC representative Olubodun Alao cited the case of Lydia Adedipe, a patient who died of ovarian cancer on Wednesday.
The group alleged that Adedipe was subjected to substandard medical care, cultural and financial exploitation, and was kept in unsanitary conditions despite paying millions of naira for treatment.
“Her death could have been avoided if the right thing was done,” NHRC stated, accusing hospital staff of lacking empathy and professionalism.
The group further alleged that multiple deaths have occurred at UCH due to inadequate staffing, outdated medical equipment, poor hygiene, and a general loss of humanity among healthcare workers.
“UCH, once a prestigious medical institution, is now a shadow of itself,” the statement added.
“The centre suffers from poor management of resources and has become a hub of medical practitioners who appear indifferent to patients’ lives.”
NHRC urged lawmakers to take immediate action to address these concerns before more lives are lost.
