A Nigerian national, identified as Idris Ibrahim, has been executed in Saudi Arabia after the country’s courts upheld his conviction for cocaine trafficking.
Saudi Arabian authorities have executed a Nigerian citizen, Idris Ibrahim, following the conclusion of legal proceedings over his conviction for smuggling cocaine into the Kingdom.
Ibrahim was executed in the Madina region on Monday, August 24, 2026, after his conviction and death sentence were upheld by the Court of Appeal and subsequently by the Supreme Court.
According to a report by DW Hausa, the Saudi authorities carried out the execution after the judicial process against the Nigerian had been completed.
Ibrahim was convicted of trafficking cocaine into Saudi Arabia, an offence that attracts severe penalties under the country’s strict anti-narcotics laws.
Saudi Arabia maintains some of the toughest penalties for drug-related offences, including capital punishment for people convicted of serious drug trafficking and smuggling offences.
The execution adds to concerns over the severe consequences Nigerians and other foreign nationals face when convicted of drug offences in Saudi Arabia and other countries with stringent narcotics laws.
The circumstances surrounding Ibrahim’s arrest, the quantity of cocaine involved and whether he had legal representation during the proceedings were not immediately disclosed in the report.
The Saudi authorities have continued to enforce harsh penalties against drug trafficking as part of their campaign against the importation and distribution of illicit substances.
Ibrahim’s execution came after the completion of the appeals process, with both the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court upholding the earlier judgment against him.
