Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed strong condemnation for the tragic killing of a truck driver, Malam Muhammad Bello, who was transporting humanitarian goods to a neighboring country.

The incident occurred on Tuesday along Dikwa-Gamboru Ngala Road in Dikwa Local Government Area.

Governor Zulum, represented by Secretary to the State Government Dr. Bukar Tijani during a press conference in Maiduguri on Thursday, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

He emphasized the government’s firm stance against such violence, asserting, “The government cannot condone” such acts and called for preventive measures.

“The Borno State Government received the sad news of the killing of a truck driver on Tuesday, 26th December 2023, along Gamboru-Ngala Road, with utter shock, anguish, and dismay,” Governor Zulum stated.

The victim, Mal. Muhammad Bello, a 35-year-old resident of Bulabulin Monday Market area in MMC, reportedly fell victim to the alleged brutality of a military personnel who demanded a bribe at a checkpoint, despite presenting proper clearance papers.

In response to the incident, the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army acknowledged the arrest of the involved soldier. Public Relations Officer Lt. Col. A.Y. Jingina confirmed the receipt of a complaint from NURTW and assured a thorough investigation.

“The Division wishes to once again reassure the members of the general public that we will remain resolute and professional in the joint effort to tackle insecurity in Borno State,” Jingina stated, underscoring the Army’s commitment to justice for the victim’s family.
