In a significant display of solidarity, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, led a delegation of prominent traditional rulers on a condolence visit to Borno State following the devastating flood that recently ravaged the state.
The flood disaster, which claimed numerous lives, destroyed properties, and displaced many residents, has left the people of Borno in grief and dire need of assistance.
Arriving in Maiduguri, the Sultan, accompanied by the Etsu Nupe, His Royal Highness Alhaji Yahya Abubakar, and other notable traditional leaders, made their first stop at the Palace of the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al-Amin El-Kanemi.
The visit, according to the Sultan’s media team, was aimed at expressing unity and compassion towards the Emirate, the people, and the government of Borno during this difficult time.
In a show of support, the Sultan announced a donation of N50 million on behalf of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council to the Borno Emirate Council.
He was joined in this gesture by the Etsu Nupe and the Emir of Gummi. The donation is expected to help alleviate the suffering of the victims and assist in the recovery process.
Following their visit to the Shehu’s Palace, the Sultan and his delegation, joined by the Shehu of Borno, proceeded to the Government House in Maiduguri, where they met with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.
During the visit, condolences and prayers were offered for the souls of those who lost their lives in the flood, with special prayers asking for their eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus.
Prayers were also said for the quick recovery of the injured, many of whom are currently receiving treatment in hospitals across the state.
The Sultan, who was accompanied by his son, Prince Amir Ssa’ad Abubakar, extended his heartfelt sympathy to Governor Zulum, the Kanem-Borno Empire, and the entire people of the state.
He expressed deep sorrow over the unprecedented nature of the flood and the extensive damage it caused to lives and property.
This visit follows an earlier act of solidarity by the Sadaukin Sokoto and Executive Chairman of the Sokoto State Zakat and Endowment Commission (SOZECOM), Engr. Muhammad Lawal Maidoki. Maidoki had led a team of sympathisers to Borno State to deliver food items and other relief materials worth N30 million to the affected residents.
The items, donated by Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo A.A., Jarman Sokoto, and Alhaji Murtala Abdulqadir Dan Iya, were distributed through the Shehu of Borno.
The relief materials included 100 bags of 100kg rice, 100 bags of garri, 100 cartons of spaghetti, 100 cartons of Maggi seasoning, and 30 jerrycans of cooking oil.
These donations were aimed at providing immediate relief to those grappling with the aftermath of the flood.
Upon receiving the relief materials, both the Shehu of Borno and Governor Zulum expressed their profound gratitude to the donors for their timely intervention.
They prayed for Allah’s blessings upon those who had shown such generosity and wished them abundant rewards in the hereafter.
The visit and donations from the Sultan of Sokoto and other leaders highlight the importance of unity in times of crisis, as traditional leaders continue to play a pivotal role in providing not just moral but also material support to their communities.
With the flood disaster leaving a trail of destruction, efforts such as these are vital in helping Borno State recover and rebuild.
