Suspected bandits on Sunday attacked a base of the Joint Security Task Force, popularly known as Operation Burst, in the Igbeti axis of Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State, setting a patrol van and part of the facility ablaze.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the attackers reportedly stormed the security base in large numbers and opened fire on personnel stationed at the facility.
The incident, which reportedly occurred along the Igbeti axis, has heightened security concerns in the area, with security agencies said to have intensified efforts to track down the assailants.
According to a report by Tribune, the attackers allegedly attempted to overrun the security post, overpower the personnel and seize their weapons.
A security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers arrived in large numbers and used what was described as powerful weapons during the assault.
“Preliminary inquiries revealed that the bandits allegedly stormed the base in large numbers and opened fire on security personnel with what was described as powerful weapons,” the source said.
The source added that the assailants were suspected of attempting to take control of the facility and dispossess the personnel of their weapons.
The attack was reportedly repelled after the Operation Burst command mobilised personnel from sister security agencies to reinforce those at the base.
The attackers subsequently fled the area following the reinforcement, sources said.
A source within the Oorelope Security Command also confirmed that a block within the security base and a patrol van were set ablaze during the attack.
The source said the fire destroyed the affected facilities, adding that further details would be released as investigations continued.
It remained unclear as of the time of filing this report whether the attackers succeeded in taking away any arms or ammunition from the security facility.
However, the security command reportedly said no casualty was recorded during the incident.
Another source from one of the sister security agencies also confirmed the attack but requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly about the operation.
Following the incident, security operatives were said to have intensified patrols and intelligence-gathering activities across the area in a bid to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.
The development comes amid persistent security concerns in parts of Oyo State, particularly communities bordering areas regarded as vulnerable to criminal activities.
As of press time, there was no official public statement giving comprehensive details of the incident, including the identities of the attackers, the extent of damage to the facility or whether any weapons were taken during the assault.
