Synergy, Commitment Crucial To Clean Energy Transition, Sustainability in Africa – CEO, Egbin Power

The Chief Executive Officer of Egbin Power,Mokhtar Bounour has said stressed the importance of the synergy among stakeholders and a shared commitment to decisive action as essential for accelerating the transition to cleaner energy and achieving a sustainable environment. 

He said this  during the maiden edition of Asharami Square, an initiative by Sahara Group focused on sustainability through impactful media advocacy.

Bounour emphasized the urgent need for collaboration among stakeholders in key sectors contributing to global greenhouse emissions, including electricity and heat production, agriculture, forestry and land use, transportation, and industry. 

“It is through collective action and a renewed commitment that we can effectively tackle the challenges posed by climate change and move towards a sustainable future,” he asserted.

Highlighting Egbin Power’s dedication to sustainability, Bounour detailed the company’s comprehensive approach to reducing carbon emissions. 

This includes pragmatic initiatives such as obsolescence management, asset upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, sustainability and environmental impact management, and the minimization of fugitive emissions. 

“These programs are strategically designed to address carbon emissions and promote cleaner energy initiatives effectively,” he noted.

He added that the company engages in afforestation projects, adopts and enforces ANSI Lighting Design Standards within its built environment, and is gradually transitioning from Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). 

Furthermore, Egbin Power is integrating Electric Vehicles (EVs) into its operations.

 “These actions demonstrate Egbin Power’s commitment to thinking globally and acting locally, ensuring that deliberate and impactful steps are taken to promote sustainability and environmental consciousness actively,” Bounour explained.

Reiterating the company’s commitment, Bounour said, “as a responsible organization, Egbin Power is steadfast in its mission to promote sustainability. 

“Our roadmap and initiatives are designed to align with global sustainable development goals and to ensure that we contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape in Africa.”

The Asharami Square event, themed ‘Carbon Footprint and the African Narrative,’ featured notable speakers from the energy sector. Among them were Foluso Sobanjo, Head of Downstream Africa at Sahara Group; Prof. Sunday Adebisi, Professor of Entrepreneurship Hub & Strategic Management at the University of Lagos; Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, Chief Commercial Officer at Ikeja Electric; Dr. Marcel Mbamalu, CEO of Newstide Publications Limited; and Chichi Aniagolu-Okoye, Regional Director for West Africa at the Ford Foundation.

These experts collectively underscored the importance of innovative approaches and collaborative efforts in driving Africa’s clean energy transition. The discussions highlighted the role of policy frameworks, technological advancements, and community engagement in fostering sustainable practices across the continent.
