President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with about 250,000 officers and soldiers expected to benefit from the new pay package beginning September 1, 2026.
The approval was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the salary adjustment is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare of military personnel engaged in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across the country.
Under the new salary structure, senior officers above the rank of colonel, including brigadier generals, major generals, lieutenant generals and generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Officers from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from private to staff sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The new salary structure is expected to increase the Armed Forces’ annual wage bill from ₦660bn to ₦924bn.
Tinubu said the decision reflected his administration’s commitment to rewarding the sacrifices of military personnel who continue to confront insecurity in different parts of the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He assured members of the Armed Forces that his administration would continue to prioritise their welfare while strengthening the military through improved equipment, weapons and technology.
According to him, security remains central to the country’s development agenda.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” Tinubu said.
The President urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and patriotism.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.
