A man whose identity could not be ascertained has reportedly met his death on Saturday while allegedly attempting to steal the statue of the Agemo deity at the Mafowoku roundabout, along Folagbade Road in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

Residents of the area woke up to a bizarre scene as they discovered the golden Agemo statue—erected and commissioned over 21 years ago—had been forcefully removed, with the lifeless body of a young man found beside its remains.

A viral video circulating online shows the suspect lying motionless in a blue top, a few metres away from the toppled statue. The circumstances surrounding his death have triggered a mix of shock, spiritual speculation, and condemnation among locals.

Confirming the incident, a resident of Ijebu Ode, Hakeem Quadri, said this .

“The incident is real; it happened right in front of my house. We all heard people making noise, and when I got outside,

“ I saw that the Agemo statue that was commissioned about 21 years ago had been removed while the person suspected to have been behind this sacrilegious act had been struck dead.”

Quadri added that the deceased’s body had since been evacuated and taken to a mortuary.

The Ogun State Police Command has yet to release an official statement as of press time, and it remains unclear whether foul play or other factors contributed to the man’s death.

The Agemo deity holds significant traditional and spiritual importance among the Ijebu people, symbolising ancestral reverence and cultural heritage.

The desecration of such an emblem is considered a grave offence in the community.
