Tragedy struck on Thursday morning when a suspected group of Yahoo boys rammed their car into a 24-year-old woman and her one-year-old daughter while they were walking along the pedestrian walkway at Kemta Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the reckless driving incident led to the death of the child, while the mother is reportedly battling for her life.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horrific scene, stating that the group, who appeared intoxicated, were inside a grey Lexus ES350 with registration number APP429JN when the car lost control and veered off the road, hitting the pedestrians.
The woman, identified as Ogunbunmi Rukayat, was carrying her baby, Sekiniat, on her back when the car struck.
While the child died instantly, Rukayat was left unconscious and is in critical condition, with reports suggesting her chances of survival are precarious.
According to eyewitnesses, the occupants of the car—four young men—were allegedly drinking inside the vehicle before the accident occurred.
“I snapped the cloth the woman used to back her baby, stained with the baby’s blood, to validate the incident,” said one witness who was at the scene.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident, adding that officers from the Kemta Police Station swiftly responded after receiving a distress call.
“Upon arriving at the scene opposite Rejoice Supermarket in Idi-Aba, officers found three critically injured victims: Ogunbunmi Rukayat (24), her daughter Sekiniat (1), and Adeola Olufolake Elizabeth (60),” Odutola stated.
“The Lexus, driven by 27-year-old Ishola Qudus, reportedly overturned after hitting the pedestrians. Qudus, who is suspected to be a learner driver, claimed the accident resulted from a loss of control.
“ He was accompanied by three other passengers identified as Azeez Adesanya, Olamide Oyedola, and Suliman Ogundele. All four occupants sustained minor injuries from the crash but were otherwise unharmed.
“Tragically, despite efforts to save the victims, Sekiniat was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta. Rukayat and the other injured woman, Elizabeth, are currently receiving intensive medical care.
“Following the incident, Ishola Qudus was taken to Aro Psychiatric Hospital for a toxicology test to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
“Further updates on the case will be provided as investigations continue,” Odutola assured.
