In a heartbreaking turn of events, 20-year-old Sanni Hameedat, a student at the University of Ilorin, has tragically ended her life, reportedly due to the unbearable burden of an unpaid 400,000 Naira loan from an online lending platform.
According to sources, Hameedat ingested a lethal dose of Sniper before her hostel’s porters called for an ambulance to rush her to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where she was pronounced dead.
The motive behind her suicide is closely linked to the relentless pressure from loan agents, who hounded her when she failed to meet her repayment obligations.
An undisclosed source revealed, “The deceased, Hameedat, was tormented by financial difficulties, stemming from a situation where her mother entrusted her with a substantial sum of money, only to be defrauded by an individual she met on Snapchat.”
This fraudster claimed to urgently require 400,000 Naira for his mother’s alleged battle with breast cancer.
Hameedat, who had a million Naira reserved for her mother, decided to loan her friend the money, believing he would repay her. Unfortunately, the friend vanished without a trace, leaving her mother in dire need of the funds.
Desperate to recover the lost money, the young student resorted to multiple loan apps, accumulating over 400,000 Naira in an attempt to repay her mother.
However, she found herself ensnared in a never-ending cycle of debt, struggling to meet her financial obligations.
On that fateful night, she informed her friends that she was going shopping around 11:00 p.m. But by 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, she had consumed the deadly pesticide, Sniper.
Her roommate discovered her in distress, vomiting, and foaming at the mouth. She was rushed to UITH, where her life could not be saved.
The University of Ilorin’s management has confirmed that an investigation into this tragic incident is underway.
The Director of Information, Mr. Kunle Akogun, stated that they are actively looking into the case and will provide further details to the public as the investigation unfolds.
