The United States has announced the official unveiling of an Air Transport Agreement with Nigeria, marking a significant advancement in civil aviation relations between the two nations.
The agreement, provisionally applied since 2000, was disclosed by the Public Diplomacy Department of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
Aligned with the U.S. Open Skies international aviation policy, the bilateral agreement emphasizes commitments to high standards of aviation safety and security.
It is expected to liberalize the international civil aviation sector in Africa, expanding economic and commercial ties, and fostering new opportunities for airlines, travel companies, and customers.
“This agreement with Nigeria is a step forward in liberalizing the international civil aviation sector in Africa,” stated the U.S. Mission.
The agreement includes provisions for unrestricted capacity and frequency of services, open route rights, a liberal charter regime, and open code-sharing opportunities.
With this agreement, air carriers are anticipated to offer more affordable, convenient, and efficient air services to travelers and shippers, promoting tourism and commerce between the two countries.
The recent announcement follows a meeting between U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Amb. Yusuf Tuggar in Washington on May 14, where they reaffirmed their commitment to a vibrant partnership aimed at building a prosperous future for both nations.
The meeting, part of the successful U.S.-Nigeria Bi-national Commission (BNC) held in Abuja last month, underscored mutual economic, governance, and security priorities.
Campbell’s visit to Nigeria included co-chairing the sixth U.S.-Nigeria Bi-national Commission and engaging with senior government officials, business leaders, and civil society representatives on various issues including partnerships, shared prosperity, democracy, governance, and accountability.
The agreement comes as Emirates Airlines announces its return to Nigeria, with flights to Dubai resuming on October 1.
This development is expected to further enhance the connectivity and economic ties between Nigeria and the broader international community.
