The University of Ibadan has emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, placing 1,291st globally among 32,148 universities and higher education institutions assessed worldwide.
The University of Lagos came second in Nigeria and 1,355th globally, while the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, ranked third nationally and 1,397th worldwide.
Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, completed Nigeria’s top four, ranking 1,522nd globally.
The ranking, published twice a year, evaluates universities and other higher education institutions using indicators linked to their web presence, visibility, openness and research excellence.
Webometrics uses digital visibility and accessibility of scholarly resources as part of its assessment, making online presence and research impact important components of institutional performance.
Landmark University ranked fifth in Nigeria and 1,659th globally, followed by the University of Ilorin at 1,883rd and Obafemi Awolowo University at 1,986th.
Ahmadu Bello University ranked eighth nationally and 2,068th globally, while the University of Port Harcourt and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, occupied the ninth and 10th positions, ranking 2,077th and 2,203rd globally, respectively.
Other institutions in Nigeria’s top 20 were Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Bayero University Kano, University of Calabar, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Federal University of Technology, Minna, University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, University of Uyo and Lagos State University.
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, ranked 19th nationally and 3,279th globally, while Olabisi Onabanjo University came 15th in Nigeria and 2,865th worldwide.
Among other notable institutions, the National Open University of Nigeria ranked 21st nationally, Federal University Oye-Ekiti 26th, Adekunle Ajasin University 27th and Osun State University 32nd.
Redeemer’s University ranked 35th in Nigeria and 4,334th globally, while Pan-Atlantic University ranked 33rd nationally and 4,256th worldwide.
At the global level, Harvard University retained the number one position, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The University of Oxford occupied fourth position, while the University of Washington ranked fifth.
Cornell University, the University of Michigan, the University of California, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University completed the global top 10.
The global list was dominated by American institutions, which accounted for seven of the top 10 positions, underscoring the continued strength of United States universities in research visibility and digital scholarly influence.
The July 2026 ranking places Nigeria’s leading university outside the global top 1,000, despite the presence of several Nigerian institutions among the world’s ranked universities.
