The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has sacked the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu.

The decision was communicated through a letter made available to reporters on Saturday.

Professor Ikechebelu, who previously served as the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), was appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor in early June following the expiration of Professor Charles Esimone’s tenure on June 3.

No reason was provided for Professor Ikechebelu’s abrupt removal from office.

The letter announcing the sack was signed by Gregory Mbadiwe, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council.

In the same letter, Mbadiwe announced the appointment of Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Arinze-Umobi’s appointment is set to take effect from Monday, July 22, 2024.

Mbadiwe noted that Professor Arinze-Umobi’s appointment, which is for a period of six months, is in accordance with the provisions of Section four of the First Schedule of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004, as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act 2007.

“The terms and conditions of your appointment are as approved by the federal government for all federal universities,” the letter to Professor Arinze-Umobi stated.

“We have full confidence in your ability to lead our esteemed institution during this period and wish you great success.”

In a procedural move, Mbadiwe also mentioned that a copy of the appointment letter has been forwarded to the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, who is expected to inform President Bola Tinubu.

The sudden change in leadership was marked by an unusual presence of military personnel on the university premises before the council’s meeting on Saturday.

The sight of soldiers caused apprehension among some students, raising concerns and speculations about the reasons behind the Vice-Chancellor’s dismissal.
