In a recent turn of events, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has expressed regret over the alleged assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, by security operatives.
The incident, which occurred two weeks ago, has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the relationship between the state government and the national labour leadership.
President Ajaero was reportedly picked up by heavily armed policemen from the NLC State Council Secretariat in Owerri on November 1, leading to accusations of brutality by organized labor.
However, the Imo State Police Command insisted that Ajaero was taken into protective custody.
Governor Uzodimma, addressing the issue at a meeting with the Imo State Council of Elders, conveyed his regret over the situation Ajaero experienced in the state.
He asserted that his government will not succumb to intimidation from any non-state actor and highlighted what he described as “politically sponsored antagonism” between Imo State and the national NLC leadership.
“The government of Imo State regrets any assault meted on the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, but at the same time condemns in its entirety the attempt by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress to take the leadership of Imo State for granted,” Governor Uzodimma stated during the meeting.”
Accusing Ajaero of taking the leadership of Imo State for granted, Governor Uzodimma referred to the antagonism as politically motivated and assured that his administration is actively addressing the situation.
He further claimed that the NLC leadership is engaging in politically sponsored antagonism against the Imo State Government.
In response to concerns about workers’ salaries, the governor explained that his administration has successfully cleared the backlog owed to Imo workers since assuming office.
