Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be without two key players when they face Egypt in their decisive final Group C match at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football.
Defender Oluwatosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini have both been suspended and will miss the encounter scheduled to determine Nigeria’s fate in the tournament.
The suspensions stem from Nigeria’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia on Saturday.
Demehin was sent off in the 40th minute after receiving a straight red card for bringing down Zambia captain Barbra Banda, who was through on goal.
Echegini, on the other hand, picked up her second yellow card of the tournament, automatically earning a one-match suspension in line with CAF’s disciplinary regulations.
The absence of the duo is expected to test the Super Falcons as they seek a victory over Egypt to strengthen their chances of advancing to the quarter-finals.
Nigeria bounced back from a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening Group C fixture by edging Zambia 1-0.
Captain Asisat Oshoala scored the decisive goal in the eighth minute before Demehin’s dismissal forced the nine-time African champions to play with 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Despite being a player short for over 50 minutes, the Super Falcons withstood sustained pressure from Zambia to secure all three points and revive their title defence.
Heading into the final round of Group C matches, Malawi top the standings with six points from two games, while Nigeria and Zambia have three points each. Egypt remain without a point, leaving qualification for the knockout stage to be decided in the concluding fixtures.
