The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has told Mrs. Ifeanyi Eke, who alleged that her 15-year-old daughter received inappropriate text messages during her UTME registration process to go ahead with her lawsuit against the board .
The JAMB stated this while responding to a recent development over a lawsuit filed by the woman.
The Board issued a cautionary note to parents, advising against enrolling minors for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Mrs. Eke’s lawsuit, seeking N100 million in damages, named JAMB and three others as defendants before the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Addressing the issue, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, clarified that the sender of the messages was not a JAMB staff member.
He asserted the Board’s readiness to address the matter in court, emphasizing that appropriate actions were taken, including reporting to security agencies.
Prof. Oloyede underscored that the incident involved a co-student, an undergraduate at a university, and reiterated that no unauthorized access to JAMB’s database occurred.
He suggested that the phone number might have been obtained at the CBT center during registration, and the Board has taken disciplinary measures against the center for negligence.
Highlighting the legal requirements for university admission, Prof. Oloyede emphasized the necessity for candidates to meet the age criteria, as outlined by law.
He urged parents to ensure their children are of appropriate age before registering for UTME.
The JAMB boss reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to addressing the matter through legal proceedings, leaving the decision to the court regarding the compensation claim.
