Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has sparked controversy within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by asserting that governors on the party’s platform favour All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, President Bola Tinubu, over their own party’s former presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

In an exclusive interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Fayose candidly expressed his views, citing the recent stance of PDP Governors’ Forum in Ibadan, Oyo State, as evidence that they are not aligned with Atiku’s political ambitions.

“The coalition proposed by Atiku is a dead horse from the outset. Tell me one influential figure who has pledged support for this coalition,” Fayose remarked, criticizing the lack of tangible backing for Atiku’s initiative.

He continued, “The governors’ unequivocal position in Ibadan sends a clear message: we stand independently, with our own identity intact.

This coalition is merely wishful thinking pushed by individuals with no real influence. The governors prioritize their survival, and for many, Tinubu represents a safer bet than Atiku.”

Fayose highlighted underlying issues within the PDP, questioning the party’s internal cohesion amidst ongoing defections and challenges.

“Look at the exodus from PDP compared to APC. There’s a fundamental problem within PDP that needs urgent resolution,” he asserted.

In a separate statement, Fayose affirmed his commitment to thwarting Atiku’s presidential aspirations under the PDP banner in 2027.

Speaking on the same platform, he declared, “If Atiku decides to run again, I will actively oppose him. It’s time for us to learn from our experiences. Nigerians need clarity and decisive leadership.”

Fayose, known for his outspoken nature, emphasized the need for equitable party leadership beyond regional considerations.

“After Tinubu’s tenure, a Southerner should rightfully assume the presidency. We must uphold the supremacy of the party and foster responsible governance,” he added.

Furthermore, Fayose disclosed that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured him he will not contest the presidency in 2027, particularly against a fellow Yoruba candidate like Tinubu.

“Makinde made it clear to me personally that he is not interested in those flyers circulating on social media. Unless circumstances change, he will not enter the presidential race,” Fayose affirmed during the interview.

He concluded by advocating for unity within the PDP, stressing the importance of peace and collective focus on national issues.

“We must build a cohesive party environment, free from internal strife and personal agendas,” Fayose remarked.

Fayose’s remarks have stirred significant debate within political circles, underscoring deep-seated divisions and strategic alignments ahead of Nigeria’s next presidential elections.
