The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will not defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite serving in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Wike made this known in a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, stating that his commitment to the PDP remains intact even as he contributes to the success of the All Progressives Congress-led federal government.
“I can’t do that, I’m not afraid – how will I build a house and you now ask me to vacate the place?” Wike queried.
“It’s you that will leave the house, not me that built it. You want to spoil a house that I built? I won’t allow you. I won’t leave, I will remain there.”
The former Rivers State governor, who has been at the centre of controversy over his loyalty since joining the Tinubu cabinet, insisted that being in the opposition should not be equated with arrogance or impunity.
“Opposition does not show impunity or arrogance. It’s the ruling party that does impunity and arrogance because we are in power,” he said.
Taking a swipe at some South-East PDP stakeholders, Wike criticised former governors Achike Udenwa and Sam Egwu, accusing them of issuing empty threats despite lacking political strength in their respective states.
“Achike Udenwa is a former governor of Imo and has no single National Assembly member. He didn’t even give his party three percent of the votes, yet he is threatening.
Sam Egwu has no National Assembly member and did not produce a governor, yet is threatening. He is empty – which threat is he issuing?”
In contrast, Wike pointed out that his political structure delivered results, including a governor and National Assembly members, yet he has refrained from threats.
Speaking on the 2027 general elections, the FCT Minister ruled out the possibility of running for president, stating that he would not contest against the man he is currently serving.
“I will not contest again. I should contest against somebody I’m working with? Who would win it if not him (Tinubu)?”
Wike also criticized what he described as fraudulent practices within the PDP, warning that such behaviour would be the party’s undoing.
