Abia State Police Command has successfully apprehended Adaeze Lawrence, a resident of Amaogbonna Road, off Osisikankwu Street in Aba, on charges of allegedly abducting a one-month-old infant.
The apprehension took place on August 14 when the Abia State SWAT team acted on credible information and swiftly carried out the arrest in Aba.
In a press release issued by Chioma Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, on behalf of Police Commissioner Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, it was disclosed that the suspect, Adaeze Lawrence, confessed during interrogation to abducting the child from the residence of Owujie Onyinyechi Gift.
The residence is situated at 5 Cricke Road, near Nigeria Brewery, Aba.
Investigations conducted by the Police further revealed that the suspect and the elder sister of the baby’s mother were former schoolmates.
Taking advantage of this pre-existing relationship, Adaeze Lawrence gained the trust of the baby’s mother.
Under the pretense of visiting her friend, the suspect proposed a celebration outing for the recent birth of the child, but instead seized the opportunity to abscond with the infant.
Medical examinations carried out at the police clinic contradicted the suspect’s denial of the crime, leading to her eventual confession. The child’s biological mother positively identified the baby, confirming that the abduction had occurred on August 6, 2023.
In response to this incident, the Abia Police Command issued a cautionary reminder to the general public, urging them to exercise continuous supervision over their children and exercise vigilance when strangers display undue interest in their children, particularly in public places.
The Police have assured the public that an ongoing investigation is in progress to further delve into the matter.
