The Enugu State Government has expressed confidence in its preparedness to host the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival, pledging a more improved and seamless experience than the just-concluded 22nd edition tagged Ogun 2024 Gateway Games.
Speaking during a press briefing held in Abeokuta on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Sports, Mr Love Ikechukwu, assured that Enugu is not only ready to receive athletes, officials, and members of the media from across the country, but also determined to raise the bar set by the Ogun State Local Organising Committee.
“We have carefully understudied the Ogun 2024 Games and are committed to building on its successes,” Ikechukwu said.
According to the Commissioner, arrangements are already underway to provide a functional games village and effective transportation logistics to ease movement for participants and officials across all venues.
“We shall provide a games village and good transportation for participants,” he stated.
To ensure smooth media coverage, Ikechukwu revealed that a dedicated media centre will be situated within the main stadium complex.
He also disclosed that the proposed Local Organising Committee (LOC) will work in collaboration with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) for hassle-free accreditation of journalists.
“We will work with SWAN executives for the accreditation of journalists that will be reporting the games,” he added.
Security, he noted, is also a top priority. The Commissioner assured the public that Governor Peter Mbah has significantly invested in security infrastructure, including the installation of CCTV surveillance across strategic locations in the state.
“Governor Mbah is committed to ensuring the safety of all participants and guests during the festival,” Ikechukwu affirmed.
Beyond sports, Ikechukwu said the festival will also offer an opportunity to showcase Enugu’s rich tourism potential.
“We have many tourist attractions in Enugu—the environment is serene, we have waterfalls and a beautiful cultural history that people can enjoy,” he said.
The 23rd National Sports Festival promises not only to celebrate sporting excellence but also to promote national unity and showcase Enugu State’s capacity to host large-scale events.
