Nollywood star laments 20-minute wait for emergency responders Victims reportedly left helpless as actor appeals to Ogun Government Incident renews concerns over emergency response on major highways
Nollywood actor, Kunle Afod, has raised the alarm over the alleged absence of emergency medical services at the scene of a serious road accident along the Ibadan-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State, lamenting that victims were left helpless for about 20 minutes without an ambulance or rescue personnel.
Afod, who reportedly witnessed the accident around Saapade in the Remo area of Ogun State on Friday, November 6, appealed to the state government and relevant emergency response agencies to urgently intervene and provide medical assistance to the injured victims.
The actor, in a video message recorded at the accident scene, expressed frustration over what he described as the failure of emergency responders to arrive despite repeated attempts by people at the scene to contact them.
He said several victims were seen lying helplessly on the road following the crash involving a bus and another vehicle, while those who witnessed the incident struggled to secure assistance for the injured.
Afod said, “It’s a terrible accident we met on the way along the Ibadan-Sagamu Expressway right now. And it’s so sad that for about 20 minutes that we’ve been here, there is no ambulance, no emergency services to come and help them. Nobody. We’ve been trying to call emergency people to come and help them.”
The actor, visibly distressed by the situation, questioned the absence of an emergency response team in an area traversed daily by thousands of motorists.
He further lamented that the injured victims appeared to have been abandoned to their fate, with no immediate assistance available to transport them to a hospital for urgent medical attention.
“See people lying down helplessly. You can see them, you can see the car behind me, the bus behind me now. Nobody, nobody in Ogun State to come and rescue them,” he said.
Afod also expressed concern that repeated calls for emergency assistance had yielded no apparent response, warning that delays in providing medical attention could worsen the condition of the victims.
“Till now we’ve been trying to call, we’ve been trying to make emergency calls. Nobody, nobody is trying to help them at all. Look at them, look at the bus, look at people lying down,” he added.
Appealing directly to the Ogun State Government, residents and relevant emergency agencies, the actor urged them to mobilise rescue personnel without further delay.
“What is happening in this state right now? What is happening? People should please come to their rescue right about now,” he pleaded.
Reiterating the seriousness of the accident, Afod identified Ishapade as the location of the incident and renewed his call for an urgent rescue operation.
“This accident is terrible, it is terrible. Ogun State, no ambulance to come and rescue people. People should please come to their aid right now, right now,” he said.
The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns about the availability, accessibility and efficiency of emergency medical services along major highways in Ogun State.
The Ibadan-Sagamu Expressway is an important transportation corridor linking parts of Ogun and Oyo states, with significant daily vehicular movement. Delayed emergency intervention following road crashes on such routes can increase the risks faced by injured victims, particularly those requiring urgent medical attention.
The development also raises questions about the preparedness of emergency response agencies, including ambulance deployment, emergency communication channels and coordination among relevant authorities during road accidents.
However, as of the time of filing this report, there was no immediate official response from the Ogun State Government or the relevant emergency management agencies explaining the reported delay or providing details about the condition of the victims.
