Governor Umoh Eno of Akwa Ibom State has read riot acts that chairmen elected into the 31 local government councils must reside within their respective domains.
This directive comes as the governor flags off the construction of official residences for these council chairmen, underscoring the importance of their presence and engagement in grassroots development efforts.
During the laying of the foundation stone for the official residence project in Eket local government area, Governor Eno emphasized the pivotal role of local government council chairmen in advancing his administration’s rural development agenda.
He stressed the need for these officials to reside within their areas of jurisdiction to foster closer ties with the local communities and better understand their needs.
Governor Eno said the mice was in a bid to uphold local governance and strengthen rural development initiatives.
He added that he aims to promote accountability, responsiveness, and inclusivity in local governance.
Governor Eno outlined the significance of the official residence project as a means to facilitate closer collaboration between his administration and local government authorities.
The initiative, he stated, is rooted in the administration’s campaign promises and policy priorities, particularly in the realm of rural development.
Acknowledging the importance of local government administration in driving grassroots development, the Transition Chairman of Eket Local Government, Hon Akaninyene Tommey, expressed appreciation for the governor’s initiative.
He highlighted the potential of the official residences to enhance the effectiveness of local government operations and service delivery.
Providing insights into the project’s scope, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Frank Archibong, outlined the design features of the official residences.
The facilities, he noted, include a main building, a 50-seater capacity hall, a generator house, boys quarters, and a gatehouse, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the infrastructure investment.
