The Ogun State Government has intensified the remediation of lead-contaminated areas in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, with the evacuation of illegally dumped industrial slags from affected communities.
The ongoing clean-up, being coordinated by the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), is aimed at removing suspected sources of lead contamination and other hazardous materials that could pose environmental and public health risks to residents, workers and other stakeholders.
The remediation exercise, which commenced earlier in the week, forms part of the state government’s efforts to address the environmental impact of industrial activities in Ogijo and restore affected communities to safer and healthier conditions.
OGEPA officials have been evacuating illegally dumped slags as part of measures to prevent further exposure to potentially contaminated materials and reduce the risk of continued pollution of the surrounding environment.
PLATFORM TIMES had earlier reported the impact of lead contamination in Ogijo following the discovery of the hazardous element in the area, raising concerns over the potential risks to residents and the environment.
The latest intervention by the state government therefore represents a continuation of efforts to address the environmental concerns associated with lead contamination and other hazardous materials in the industrial town.
The agency said the removal of the slags remained a critical component of the wider remediation programme designed to restore the environmental integrity of Ogijo.
The General Manager of OGEPA, Kehinde Bello, assured residents that the state government was determined to achieve a comprehensive clean-up of the affected areas.
Bello said the agency would continue to deploy appropriate environmental management measures to identify and tackle sources of contamination in Ogijo.
He described the evacuation of the illegally dumped slags as an important step towards containing the environmental threat and restoring affected locations.
The OGEPA boss urged residents, industrial operators and other stakeholders to cooperate with officials carrying out the remediation exercise.
He also warned against practices capable of worsening environmental contamination, particularly the indiscriminate dumping of industrial waste and slags.
Bello said the government would sustain the clean-up exercise until the affected areas were adequately remediated.
He added that the ultimate objective was to restore Ogijo to a safe, healthy and environmentally sustainable industrial community.
