The National President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr. Tope Osundara, has confirmed the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a member who was abducted ten months ago from the Senior Staff Quarters at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.

Dr. Popoola, who spent close to a year in captivity, has now been reunited with her family.

Dr. Osundara who spoke with PLATFORM TIMES exclusively on Wednesday, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, and the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, for their commitment to the cause.

He said “there was no exchange of any form of money. No greasing of palms.

“We thank God for the success of this journey. She has been released. I must thank our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, and the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa.

“We had discussions with them, and they promised us they would take action. The result of that action is what you are seeing today.

“I also want to thank all NARDites across the federation and my LOC for trusting us with the capacity to handle this matter over the course of 10 months.

“The President has done very well by us. I must also thank the President of the NMA, Prof. Bala Audu, who was fully involved.

“Together, we collaborated and ensured the release of the lady who has a baby she hadn’t seen for almost a year.

“She has been reunited with her family after spending 10 months and a few days in captivity.”

Dr. Popoola, her husband, Squadron Leader Nurudeen Popoola, and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy, were kidnapped on December 27, 2023, at the National Eye Centre.

Following prolonged negotiations, her husband was released in March 2024, but Dr. Popoola and Abdul-Mugniy remained in captivity until now.

Dr. Osundara also acknowledged the unwavering support of the NARD community, the Local Organising Committee, and the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Bala Audu, who was instrumental in coordinating efforts to secure Dr. Popoola’s freedom.
